You must be 13 years old or older to apply online for a library card. Parents or guardians may submit an online application for children who are 12 years old or younger.
You must be a resident of Pulaski or Perry County, or be employed in or enrolled in school in one of those two counties, to be eligible for a free library card. If you are not a resident of these counties you may be eligible to apply for a Gateway Card at your local library. Alternatively, you may apply for a nonresident library card for the fee of $60 per year.
Please note: Beginning May 2015, nonresident card holders will not be able to access CALS's OverDrive ebooks/downloadable audiobook collection.
The procedure for activating your card will be emailed to you, once you have submitted your application.
All information related to your library card, including holds, overdues, and what you have checked out is confidential (Arkansas Statute 13-2-704). It can only be released to someone else with your written consent or, in the case of telephone notification, to anyone who can show proof of sharing your telephone number.
The Gateway card is an agreement to provide public library service to residents in Central Arkansas without charging a non-resident fee. The program covers residents in the following counties in Arkansas:
Arkansas, Bradley, Calhoun, Chicot, Clark, Cleburne, Cleveland, Conway, Dallas, Desha, Drew, Faulkner, Garland, Grant, Hot Springs, Jackson, Jefferson, Lincoln, Lonoke, Montgomery, Nevada, Perry, Pike, Polk, Pope, Prairie, Pulaski, Saline, Van Buren, and White Counties.
The program started in 1995 as a successful federal government grant. Library patrons who are "Gateway" cardholders have reciprocal borrowing privileges in approximately 49 libraries in a 29 county service area. This allows access to a collection of over 1.5 million items.
Cardholders must have a current library card from their home library and be at least 14 years of age. They must apply for the "Gateway" card at the home library in the county where they reside, then bring their Gateway card to any CALS library to receive a CALS card. Cards must be renewed each year at the home library.
A $3.00 fee will be charged to cardholders returning an item to another library other than the library in which the item was checked out. Replacement cards will be issued by the home library.
Materials should be returned on or before the due date and any fines or fees must be paid in order to continue borrowing privileges.
Effective February 1, 2014, Gateway patrons do not have access to the CALS Downloadable Library. To obtain access to downloadable materials, patrons must purchase a non-resident card.
