CALS Max Milam Library to Plant WWI Memorial Tree
The Central Arkansas Library System (CALS) Max Milam Library is pleased to announce a tree planting ceremony, Saturday, February 24, at 2:00 p.m., on the grounds of the Milam Library, 609 Aplin Avenue, Perryville, to honor World War I veterans who served in the Great War.
Through a partnership with the Arkansas World War I Centennial Commemoration Committee and the Arkansas Forestry Commission, CALS sponsored a willow oak tree that will be planted on library grounds. The Arkansas World War I Centennial Commemoration Committee will provide soil from the Meuse-Argonne National Cemetery in France to be added when the tree is planted.
Nearly 72,000 soldiers from Arkansas served in World War I with 2,183 fatalities through combat or illness.
The Arkansas World War I Centennial Commemoration Committee has held several commemoration events during 2017 and will continue through this year, including the tree planting program in each county.
