Magazines & Journals



You can access hundreds of magazine and journal articles through the library's databases 24 hours a day. If you're at home or school when you access these, you'll be asked to log in. Type the number underneath your barcode on the back of your library card to log in. If you have any trouble, call the Reference Department at 501.918.3000.

  • Academic Search Elite (Ebscohost) — This database provides fulltext articles from over 2,000 scholarly journals, many peer-reviewed, and covers virtually every area of academic study.
  • Expanded Academic ASAP — From arts and the humanities to social sciences, science and technology, this database meets research needs across all academic disciplines. Access scholarly journals, news magazines, and newspapers, many with full text and images.
  • General OneFile — A one-stop source for news and periodical articles on a wide range of topics: business, computers, current events, economics, education, environmental issues, health care, hobbies, humanities, law, literature and art, politics, science, social science, sports, technology, and many general interest topics.
  • General Reference Center Gold — A general interest database that integrates a variety of sources: newspapers, reference books, magazines, and trade publications. Find articles on current events, popular culture, business and industry trends, the arts and sciences, sports, hobbies, and more.
  • Index Arkansas — an index to articles and other information published in county history journals as well as selected statewide magazines, newspapers and books. Check the CALS catalog to see which of the titles are available at CALS and submit an Interlibrary Loan request if the title is not available at CALS.
  • MAS Ultra-School Edition (Ebscohost) — Provides fulltext articles from hundreds of popular magazines, as well as pamphlets, reference books, biographies, primary source documents and images, all intended for high school students.
  • Masterfile Premier (Ebscohost) — A general periodicals database with full text information from more than 2,050 publications including magazines, reference books, primary source documents and images.
  • Middle Search Plus (Ebscohost) — A database of fulltext magazines, biographies, primary source documents and images, all intended for middle school and junior high students.
  • Newspaper Source (Ebscohost) — A database with selected articles from about 30 national and international newspapers, as well as some regional newspapers, and television and radio transcripts. Some articles from The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette October 2000 through September 2002 are indexed.
  • Popular Magazines — Popular Magazines includes 1000 of the most searched magazines. This database is 100% full text and includes titles like Consumer Reports, Time, National Geographic, The New Yorker, Newsweek, Vanity Fair, Vogue, Fortune, Business Week, National Review, Cosmopolitan, NPR and even Oprah.
  • Primary Search (Ebscohost) — A database of fulltext magazines intended for elementary school students.
  • TOPICsearch(Ebscohost) — Provides information about current events which are likely to be discussed in the classroom. Includes more than 1,000 fulltext periodicals.
  • The World News Digest (Facts on File) — Provides an archival record of domestic and international news, covering major political, social, and economic events since November 1940.

To search by subject, select a database and type your desired subject in the search box. For example, if you're interested in the electoral college you would:

  1. Select the Masterfile Premier database (You can search as many databases as you want and several would be helpful for this topic; Masterfile Premier will be our example.)
  2. Type in your library card number.
  3. Select EBSCOhost.
  4. Select Masterfile Premier from the list of databases available through EBSCOhost.
  5. Type electoral college in the search box.
  6. You can limit your search by the different options listed below the search box.
  7. Click on the Search button.
  8. The middle column contains your results.
  9. You can narrow and limit your results with the options in the right and left columns.
  10. If you see a link for HTML Full Text or PDF Full Text that means you can read the full article within the database.
  11. You can also print, download, and email articles to yourself.

To find out if a database includes a particular title, click the Publications button near the top of the database and search for the magazine or journal title in which you are interested. For example, if you're interested in Newsweek you would:

  1. Select the Academic Search Elite database (Newsweek is indexed in several other databases as well; this is our example.).
  2. Type in your library card number.
  3. Select EBSCOhost.
  4. Deselect Masterfile Premier from the list and select Academic Search Elite from the list of databases available.
  5. Click on the Publications button near the top of the database opening page.
  6. Type Newsweek into the search box and click on the Search button.
  7. The record for Newsweek shows that bibliographic records are available from 1985 and full text is available from 1990. Full text means you can read the full text of the article through the database.
