Pardon our dust while we revitalize the Main Library!
It has been 12 years since the Main Library of the Central Arkansas Library System was moved to its current location at 100 Rock Street. Since then, we have served over 5 million patrons, expanded our collections, added services and upgraded technology. And, though 4 new branches have been added to the library system, few changes have been made to CALS's flagship building in downtown Little Rock.
Beginning April 2010 and continuing through Summer 2011, however, we will be renovating and reorganizing the Main Library to better accommodate the needs of our community and to better serve as a principal source of information, education and entertainment for the people of central Arkansas. When construction is complete, new features of the Main Library will include:
- 25% more space for books, cds, dvds, periodicals, and special collections;
- a new, state-of-the-art space exclusively for teens, including a game room, television room, and café;
- expanded facilities for our free computer training classes;
- enhanced and enlarged areas for reading, study, and public meetings;
- introduction of self-checkout stations utilizing new RFID technology.
Renovation will take place without closing the Main Library to patrons. While every effort will be made to limit noise from construction to times when patrons are not in the building, we appreciate your patience with our efforts to improve the Main Library.
