CALS Begins Conversion to RFID System
Two Central Arkansas Library System (CALS) libraries have scheduled conversion to a system utilizing Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. The Sue Cowen Williams Branch will be closed August 23-26, and the Maumelle Branch will be closed August 30 - September 4 for the change. While the Williams and Maumelle Branches are closed, patrons may use any other CALS location for checking out or returning items, placing or picking up holds, or computer access.
RFID technology will make the checkout process simpler and faster, allowing staff to spend more time providing customer service. Patrons choosing to do so will be able to check out at one of the new self-check stations. Additional benefits to RFID technology include enhanced security of library materials and better inventory control.
Seven other branches have undergone the self-check conversion process. The Main Library and the Milam branches are scheduled to go through the process throughout the rest of 2010.
